Sciatic Pain and Discomfort due to Piriformis Syndrome
Problem Description
Many people suffer from sciatic pain. This pain can radiate from the lower back area to the buttocks and even down the legs. The pain is often described as shooting pain, tingling, and burning sensations. Additional symptoms are numbness and muscle weakness. This condition can be debilitating and affect quality of life.
Problem Source
The source of sciatic pain is from irritation of the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve is the largest and longest nerve in the human body. It runs from the lower spine, through the buttocks, and down the legs to the feet. The piriformis muscles are intertwined with the sciatic nerve deep in the buttocks. When a piriformis muscle becomes inflamed and rubs or presses against the sciatic nerve, sciatic pain may develop. This condition is known as piriformis syndrome.
Problem Diagnosis
Diagnosing piriformis syndrome can be challenging. The use of Ultrasound, CT scanning, EMG and MRI combined with physical exams have been useful for obtaining accurate diagnosis.
Problem Treatment
Medicinal remedies may include corticosteroids for inflammation control, anti-inflammatory medicines, antispasmodic medicines, muscle relaxants to loosen the tight muscle, and botulinum toxin injections to paralyze the muscle to aid in muscle tightness and/or spasms. Non-medicinal treatments include mild electric current therapy for blocking pain receptors and controlling spasms, guided exercise, stretching, and massage.
If these treatments fail to provide the needed relief, then more invasive surgical measures for manual correction may be required. One or more types of treatment may be required for relief. Unfortunately, many chemical, electrical, and/or invasive treatments can have undesirable side effects.
Problem Prevention
Proactive measures for those that suffer piriformis syndrome pain include incorporating regular low stress walking, jogging, biking, and water exercise. Regular stretching and massage can be blended into the daily routine to keep the piriformis muscle well warmed, limber, and supple. Practicing proper posture is helpful for preventing piriformis syndrome pain.
Activities to avoid include stair climbing, long periods of seating, twisting while lifting, over exertion such as long distance running, and not warming up or cooling down when performing strenuous activities. Piriformis syndrome may prove to be a lifelong battle. Lifestyle changes for effective long-term pain relief will be required.
Problem Solution Methods
Massage therapy is common for relief from piriformis syndrome pain. One avenue for regular massage therapy is through the use of massage chairs. With advancements in robotics, massage chairs are able to deliver pain relief in 3 main ways:
The first is tactile massage therapy. Recent technological advancements have improved the quality and variety of massage styles offered by massage chair roller mechanisms. Enormous efforts through R&D have achieved choreography that rivals a human massage. Importantly, massage chairs are able to apply controlled pressure with complex therapeutic motions, such as spiral kneading and Junetsu style circular movements. Refined targeted massage using high resolution digital control can reach specific muscles such as the piriformis muscles located deep in the glutes muscle group. Application of precise and accurate movements tailored to apply the appropriate pressure and massage style encourages muscle relaxation and healing. This enhanced agility produces an effective and authentic massage experience. Targeted, accurate, precise, and therapeutic massage is now available to millions of humans that do not have access to a human massage experience.
The second is compression massage using air cells strategically placed around the body. The air cells allow the chair to manipulate the body providing gentle lifting, rotating, and squeezing. These actions encourage muscle loosening, stress reduction, and irritation reduction that promote tissue healing. Air cell manipulation provides broad relief that targets muscles with a more comprehensive application. As an example, air cell compression will massage the gluteal region providing generalized benefits that reach the piriformis muscles. The benefit of broad air cell massage is it helps generate broad beneficial body movements, similar to those that typically require more demanding activities like bending, lifting, walking, or running.
The third is heat therapy. Heat periodically applied to the affected area can promote an increase in blood flow encouraging healing from damage due to injury or disease while loosening muscles for pain relief and improved freedom of movement.
Benefits Associated with Massage Frequency
A major benefit of massage chair therapy occurs with frequent and consistent applications of massage. Switching from monthly sessions to daily sessions enhances the therapeutic effect. Increased session frequency changes the massage experience beyond pampering into a true source of therapeutic pain relief.
Compare therapeutic massage to exercising. Occasional exercising once or twice a month will not provide a long-term health benefit. Exercising is beneficial when it occurs often and routinely, even a 10 min walk daily is helpful. Regular and consistent massage therapy allows therapeutic massage benefits to build over time, improving your quality of life.
Suggested Massage Chair Models
Healing Touch has three massage chair models that are excellent for treating piriformis syndrome. The Panasonic MAJ7, Panasonic MAK1, and the Panasonic MAN1 offer amazing agility and dexterity using proprietary robotic technology called RealPro. Few massage chairs are capable of reaching the piriformis muscle effectively. These chairs are capable of providing real relief.
